Creamy Southern Slaw

If you like a slaw that’s slightly sweet, but really delicious, this one is just the ticket! I’ve made this slaw for many occasions, and it always gets rave reviews. It’s easy to make, but requires some chopping of the ingredients.  You can chop the cabbage by hand or you can use your food processor.  The carrots can be chopped in the food processor, too, but the peppers and onion really need to be chopped by hand.  You should use a sharp knife for these tasks.

For the dressing, I have discovered a bottled product from the refrigerator case in the produce section of the grocery.  I hope the stores in your area carry it too - it’s a brand called Marzetti’s Original Slaw dressing. If not, you can find a similar product.  I have fallen in love with this slaw dressing.  I do add mayonnaise, a little sugar, and shhhh- my secret ingredient, a small amount of heavy whipping cream.  As my granddaughter declared, it’s the best slaw she’s ever tasted!

Creamy Southern Slaw

Ingredients:

  • 4 cups cabbage

  • ⅓ cup carrots

  • ⅓ cup onion (½ of a small onion)

  • ¼ cup sweet red pepper

  • ¼ cup yellow pepper

  • ⅓ cup green pepper

  • ¾ cup Marzetti’s Original Slaw Dressing

  • ½ cup Hellman’s mayonnaise

  • 3 tablespoons granulated sugar

  • 2-3 tablespoons heavy whipping cream

Directions:

Fit your food processor with the shred or slice blade. Remove outer leaves from head of cabbage which tend to be tough. Cut off chunks of cabbage with a knife and process enough to make 4 cups of chopped cabbage. Place in mixing bowl. Use food processor or chop carrots by hand and add to cabbage in mixing bowl. Dice all other vegetables by hand and add to the cabbage and carrots in mixing bowl. Mix together all other ingredients and add salt and pepper to taste. Refrigerate in a sealed container. This will keep well for a week if it’s not gobbled up immediately.
